Chelsea wildlife control tip of the month:

Mole hill:
A molehill is a conical mound of some loose soil raised by small burrowing mammals. There are many small underground creatures that create such mounds including moles, voles, mole-rats and marsupial rats. Molehills are sometimes the only clue to indicate the presence of such dangerous animals in the lawn. Mole hills are basically the waste material from repairing or digging the burrows, therefore often found where the animals are establishing the new burrows as well as where the existing one are damaged for instance by the weight of grazing livestock. Moles beneath the roots of shrubs and trees, roots support the tunnel and Chelsea wildlife removal mole hills are not very common therefore a dense population of animals may be inconspicuous in such places. More commonly the mole hills occur in the lines along the route of burrow, but it is also possible that they may not occur directly on the burrow itself rather at the ends of little side tunnels. Moles can run deep down the surface, some 12 to 18 inches deep.

Benefit of mole hills:
The moles hills are not always destructive for the garden; sometimes it is used as a source of fine soil for good gardening. They are particularly valued by some permacultures’ practicians for fine potting soil that is produced by the claws of moles. Another important advantage of mole hills to soil by aerating and tilting it that adds to its fertility. But it can cause harm to the gardens and grass area especially when it is a golf course and represent a minor safety hazard as well.

The things to do:
Moles hills should be removed if not desired, the moles may also be killed as well as the fresh Massachusetts mole hills should be removed carefully as soon as they be seen, so the little creatures and their galleries undamaged thus reducing the need for moles to make any further molehills when they clear the surface out of the tunnels. In order to determine the moles in your lawn, recording the mole hills is considered as a good source. We all know the common phrase “to make a mountain out of the mole hill” that means to exaggerate a minor issue, stems from this soil’s name. Moles dig tunnels blindly in the soil and use to eat whenever they happen upon food. Moles have high metabolism and have to eat a lot that means a lot of digging.
