Arlington wildlife control tip of the month:

How to get rid of flying squirrels: (prevention via fences or home repairs, exclusion, trapping and discuss but discourage repellents and killing animals) Flying squirrels are known as small rodents. Actually they do not fly but just glide through the air using their skin flaps that are stretched from front to back leg. Flying squirrel is nocturnal, means they are active at night. They use to live in groups and thus are colonizing.

The most common complaints about them include:
• Chewing of wood outside home
• Scurrying in attic at night
• Chewing on wires in attic
• Odor from large colony in attic

Because of such problems people wish to get rid of flying squirrels found anywhere in the house. Flying squirrels are considered as a small but clever rodent that used to spend a big part of their lives in traveling from one tree to another, in case they are living in the natural habitat. Here are some useful methods to get rid of flying squirrels:

Sealing the entry points:
When you are sure about the presence of this animal, seal all the entry points except one they are using most. And when the flying squirrels are out, seal that only point too. You can use foam or caulk to close the holes. Beware of the young ones. If they exist you must wait for their exit.

Live trapping:
For squirrel removal nothing is considered best as live trapping. Many things can be used as squirrel bait but peanut butter is the best. This is also a humane method to get rid of flying squirrels.

Sanitation:
Mostly the flying squirrels get into your territory or Arlington MA homes when they are in search of food. If they do not find anything to eat, their presence will be purposeless. Therefore keep all the eating material away from their access and get rid of them. You can also scatter some food away from your residence if you are failed to stop entering them in your house. In this way they will automatically come out.

Some humane instructions:
• Never think about killing the flying squirrels deliberately as it is a crime in certain states. • You can call some professional to make them out of your house, in case you cannot do it yourself. • Repellents are also thought to be a good source of getting rid of this nocturnal creature but try to avoid teasing the animals especially when you have other effective ways to do so.
